Seminar on Sustainable Development and Climate Change for the North of Africa
The Seminar, organized by the CCM and the Morocco RC, took place in Mahdia (Morocco) last March, with the participation of all North African National Societies.
As result of this seminar, participants expressed their will to integrate climate change and environment within their national strategic plans and define activities focusing on those issues.
In order to provide follow-up to the adopted recommendations, the CCM sent a questionnaire to National Societies asking about the initiatives starting from the seminar. From this information, we can see that all NS participants are currently implementing initiatives in areas such as: developing campaigns for public awareness, implementing local projects, or carrying out national and regional research.
Regarding future actions the priorities have been set as follows:
1. Public awareness and advocacy: actions with the youth community and other stakeholders
2. Public health: water and sanitation, waste management and others alike
3. Disaster management: drought, floods, migration, landslides and other shocks.
As one of the results of the seminar, the Morocco RC has expressed its willing to hold the next edition of the Youth Camp, Atlantis V, which will be focussed on Sustainable Environnment and Climate Change. It will be take place between July-August 2009.
From its side the Algerian RC would like to carry out a school awarness campaign on climate change throughout the country. This iniative will starts now in desember and will go on for 7 more months supported by the CCM and the Algerian line Ministries involved.
